What is the significance of adding proteases at the time of isolation of genetic material (DNA) ?

The proteases degrade the proteins of the cells from which the DNA is being isolated. Presence of these proteins in the cell may interfere with any downstream treatment of DNA such as the functioning of restriction endonuclease and DNA ligase etc., if they are not removed from DNA preparation.
