What are the causes and symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Studies have listed several causes for the disorder and have found abnormalities in several parts of the brain that are believed to have occurred during foetal development. The problem may be centered in the parts of the brain responsible for processing language and information from senses. There also appears to be a strong genetic basis for Autism. Family studies have shown that identical twins are more likely to be diagnosed with autism than twins who are fraternal (not genetically identical).

Symptoms: 

(a) They have different ways of learning. 

(b) More acute reaction to sensory stimulation such as sound and touch. 

(c) Avoidance of eye contact and physical contact such as hug. 

(d) Profound problems with social interaction. 

(e) Difficulty in making social connection 

(f) They may became regid when they are held, they cry when picked up and show little interest in human contact. 

(g) Have uncontrolled emotional outbrust. 

(h) Express themselves in a manner that does not suit the specific social situation of the moment. 

(i) Some children do not speak at all. 

(j) Verbal communication problem vary greatly in autistic children. 

(k) Some children with Autism may react to sounds by banging their head or flapping their fingers. 

(l) Not responding to conversation directed at them. 

(m) Practrsing excessively repeated behaviour.
