Scoring system and norms for Harvard step test

Scoring: PEI (Physical Efficiency Test) is completed with the following formula

PEI = Duration of exercise in seconds x 100 / 2 x Sum of pulse count in recovery

e.g.,, Exercise period completed = 5 minute. Recovery. Period pulse count: 75 (1 - 1 1/2 min), 50 for (2 - 2 1/2, min), and 35 for 3 to 3 1/2 min. The sum is 160.

PEI = 30000/ 2 x 160 = 94 (Excellent)
