  • Champaran Satyagrah-
    • The first Satyagraha movement inspired by Mahatma Gandhi occurred in the Champaran district of Bihar in the year 1917.
    • Mahatma Gandhiji was persuaded by Raj Kumar Shukla one such oppressed Indigo cultivator to visit the region. As a result of Gandhiji’s visit.
    • The Champaran Sathyagraha began.
    • An ashram was established by Gandhi established an ashram in Champaran.
    • A detailed survey and study of the villages were organized where Gandhiji’s handpicked group of eminent lawyers like  Babu Braj Kishore Prasad, Dr. Anugrah Narayan Sinha, and Dr.Rajendra Prasad accounted the general state of degenerate living, atrocities, and terrible episodes of sufferings of the indigo farmers.
  • Mill-worker’s Satyagrah-
    • Gandhi used Satyagraha and hunger strike for the first time during an industrial dispute between the owners and workers of a cotton mill in Ahmedabad.
    • The owners wanted to withdraw the plague bonus to the workers while the workers were demanding a hike of 35% in their wages.
    • During the peaceful strike led by Gandhi, he underwent a hunger strike.
    • The Ahmedabad Mill strike was successful and the workers were granted the wage hike they wanted.
  • Kheda Satyagrah-
    • 1918 was a year of failed crops in the Kheda district of Gujarat due to droughts.
    • As per law, the farmers were entitled to remission if the produce was less than a quarter of the normal output.
    • But the government refused any remission from paying land revenue.
    • Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, under Gandhi’s guidance, led the farmers in protest against the collection of taxes in the wake of the famine.
    • The protest was peaceful and people showed remarkable courage even in the face of adversities like confiscation of personal property and arrest.
    • Finally, the authorities gave in and gave some concessions to the farmers.
  • Borsad Satyagrah-
    • In September 1923 the government announced a levy of Rs 2.5 lakhs on the residents of Borsad taluka as its expense on special anti-dacoity police posted there.
    • Sardar Patel and his colleagues uncovered evidence of the police being in cahoots with the dacoits; and that the villagers who had shown exemplary courage in resisting the dacoits or in informing the police were severely victimized.
    • Sardar Patel and his team organized the villagers for agitation against the levied tax.
