And took the surname of 'Satyarthi-the seeker of the truth'.
Satyarthi founded the organization Bachpan Bachao Andolan, in 1980 which has freed thousands of children from slave-like conditions.
He conceived and led the Global March Against Child Labor and its international advocacy body, the ICCLE.
He has also contributed to the development of international conventions on the children's rights.
He started a magazine, Sangharsh Jaari Rahega where he doubled up as owner cum a photo-journalist.
