The cube 125 small cubes. All the edge pieces has the colour, including white at is inner surface. 12 edges in a cube and since it is a 5 × 5 × 5 cube, each edge has 3 pieces. So 36 edge pieces in total has 3 colors. And now considering the corner pieces it has 4 colors along with the white. And 8 corner pieces in total. So 44 pieces have 3 or more different colors on them.

Hence, 44 is the right answer.
