  • According to the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958, any structure, sculpture, inscription, etc., which are in existence for no less than 100 years is termed ancient.

 

  •  Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958 is an Act to provide for the preservation of ancient and historical monuments and archaeological sites and the remains of national importance, for the regulation of the archaeological excavations, and the protection of cultures, carvings, and other like objects.
  • According to the Act Ancient Monuments any structure, erection or monument, or any tumulus or place of interment or any cave. rock-sculpture, inscription, or monolith which is of historical, archaeological, or artistic interest and which has been in existence for not less than 100 years. These include
    • Remains of the ancient monument.
    • Site of the ancient monument.
    • A portion of land adjoining the site of the ancient monument.
    • The means of access to and convenient inspection of the ancient monument.

 About ASI (Archaeological Survey of India):

  • The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), under the Ministry of Culture, is the premier organization for the archaeological researches and protection of the cultural heritage of the nation.
  • The main work of this organization is to Maintenance of ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains of national importance are the prime concern of the ASI.
  • Besides it regulate all archaeological activities in the country as per the provisions of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. It also regulates Antiquities and Art Treasure Act, 1972.
  • The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) was formed in 1861 by a statute passed into law by Canning, with Alexander Cunningham as its first Archaeological Surveyor, to excavate and conserve India’s ancient built heritage.
  • The current Director-General of ASI is Smt. Usha Sharma (As of Oct 2021).
