Correct Answer - Option 2 : Sodium

The correct answer is Sodium.

  • Sodium is a highly reactive metal and reacts vigorously with the oxygen, carbon dioxide, and moisture present in the air such that it may even cause a fire.
  • To prevent this explosive reaction, Sodium is kept immersed in kerosene because Sodium doesn't react with kerosene.

  • If it is kept in the open air, it easily reacts with the oxygen and catches fire. Since kerosene is a mixture of hydrocarbons, it won’t react with it.
  • It is a soft metal, reactive, and with a low melting point, with a relative density of 0.97 at 20ºC (68ºF).
  • From the commercial point of view, sodium is the most important of all alkaline metals.
  • It reacts quickly with water, and also with snow and ice, to produce sodium hydroxide and hydrogen.
