  • Patra served as the executive director of the RBI Monetary Policy Department prior to his appointment as deputy governor, where he relocated in 2006 and was an internal member of the influential Monetary Policy Committee as well.

  • Earlier, Patra worked in the economic research department of RBI as an advisor in charge of international finance, currency, and banking.
  • In January 2020, Patra was appointed by the Cabinet Appointments Committee as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on the advice of the Cabinet Secretary-headed Financial Sector Regulatory Selection Search Committee, replacing Viral Acharya, who resigned in July 2019, for a term of three years.
  • Patra became the first RBI career economist to be promoted to the position with his appointment as Deputy Governor.
