Brahmo Samaj 
  • Raja Ram Mohan Roy is regarded as the Father of Modern India who founded the first religious reform organizationBrahmo Samaj in 1828
  • The two most prominent leaders of the Brahmo Samaj were Keshab Chandra Sen and Debendranath Tagore
  • It forbade idol worship and discarded meaningless rites and rituals.
  • The greatest achievement in the field of social reform was the abolition of 'Sati' in 1829
  • To spread the moto of Brahmo Samaj Keshab Chandra Sen travelled throughout Madras and Bombay presidencies and later northern India.
Young Bengal Movement
  • Henry Louis Vivian Derozio is the founder of the Young Bengal movement.
  • Henry Louis Vivian Derozio was an Indian poet of Portuguese origin and assistant headmaster of Hindu College, Kolkata.
  • He was a radical thinker of his time and one of the first Indian educators to disseminate Western learning and science among the young men of Bengal.
  • He joined the Hindu College as a teacher at the age of seventeen
  • He and his students called DErozians or Young Bengal promoted radical reformist ideas among the people of Bengal. 
Ramakrishna Mission
  • The Ramakrishna Mission was established in 1897 by Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. 
  • The Mission has drawn all into ideals and principles from the life and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna.
  • The mission worked to help the poor, improve the conditions of women, and fight against untouchability and superstition and overhaul the education system. 
  • He stressed the supremacy of the Hindu religion and culture.
  • He anticipated that Hinduism was based on spiritual values while western culture and civilization were materialistic.
  • He believed in the unity and equality of all religions.
  • Economically, he was in favour of agro-based small-scale industries.
Aligarh Movement
  • Sir Syed Ahmad Khan launched the Aligarh Movement of which Aligarh was the center.
  • He had two immediate objectives in mind:
  • to remove the state of misunderstanding and tension between the Muslims and the new British
    government, and
  • to induce them to go after the opportunities available under the new regime without deviating in any way from the fundamentals of their faith.
