Assertion (A) : In osmosis, solvent molecules pass through a semi-permeable membrane from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated when these two are separated by the semi-permeable membrane.

Reason (R) : The vapour pressure of the solvent over the dilute solution is less than that over the concentrated solution.

(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.

(c) A is true but R is false.

(d) A is false but R is true.

Best answer

(c) A is true but R is false.

Assertion (A) : In osmosis, solvent molecules pass through a semi-permeable membrane from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated one, when these two are separated by the semi-permeable membrane.

Thus, A is true.

Reason (R) : The vapour pressure of the solution will be less than that of the pure liquid at the same temperature.

Thus, R is false.
