The measures to combat deforestation are:
(i) Reforestation: Reforestation is the practice of replenishing existing forests that have been deplete through deforestation. Reforestation is a very important procedure in order to save our planet.
(ii) Energy plantation: Energy plantation refers to growing certain species of trees and shrubs which are harvestable in a comparably shorter time and are specifically meant for fuel. The fuel wood may be used either directly in wood burning stoves and boilers or processed into methanol, ethanol and producer gas.
(iii) Forest harvesting of non-timber forest products: Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are preferred over timber products because, it does not involve logging of trees. (NTFPS) are biological resources other than timber that can be harvested from forest for subsistence for trade. Therefore, sustained use of NTFPS is the key to sustainable forest management.
(iv) Exploring alternative resources for livelihood: We depend on forest resources especially trees for various day to day needs. Renewable sources of energy like solar, hydropower, geothermal, wind energy, etc., are clean sources of energy. Using renewable sources of energy not only reduces the need to cut trees for food, but also contributes in controlling pollution and other ill-effects on environment.
