0.1 mole of a compound of S and Cl on oxidation with conc. HNO3 and subsequent treatment gave 0.1 mole of PbCl2 and 0.2 mole of BaSO4 as precipitates. Determine the molecular formula of the compound.

According to problem

\(S_xCl_y \longrightarrow x SO_4^{2-} + yCl^- \longrightarrow xBaSO_4 + \frac y2PbCl_2\)

0.1 mole of SxCly = 0.1 x mole of BaSO4\(\frac{0.1 y}2\) mole of PbCl2

or 0.1 x = 0.2; x = 2

\(\frac{0.1 y}2\) = 0.1; y = 2

\(\therefore \) Molecular formula = S2Cl2
