A metal oxide is reduced by heating it in a stream of hydrogen. It is found that after complete reduction 3.15 g of the oxide have yielded 1.05g of the metal. We may conclude that

(a) Atomic weight of the metal is 4

(b) Equivalent weight of the metal is 8

(c) Equivalent weight of the metal is 4

(d) Atomic weight of the metal is 8

Best answer

Correct option is (c) Equivalent weight of the metal is 4

WM = Weight of metal

WO = Weight of oxygen

EM = Equilivalent weight of metal

WM = 1.05g

WO = 3.15 − 1.05 = 2.10g

Now,

\(E_M = \frac{W_M \times 8}{W_O}\)

\(= \frac{1.05 \times 8}{2.10}\)

\(= 4\)

So the equivalent weight of the metal is 4.
