The ferry was waiting at its usual post by the ghat. It was 1 o'clock. By that time, the doing brisk business flower seller peddled her wares for two hours, the fruit seller was selling fruits throughout the day. His mangoes being especially popular. No one knew when it happened, but all of a sudden, there was a shrill cry, followed by shouts of 'Help! Get him out of the water!' The cry was that of a mother. A minute ago, she minded her younger son and did not notice that the elder one inched towards the water as playing. The boy's saviour was an unlikely one. One of the stray dogs who was hanging around the ghat in the hopes of scraps thrown by passersby jumped into the water as soon as he saw the boy fall in. The brave creature was holding on to the boy's shirt by his teeth and dragged him back to the ghat. Why did he do it? Perhaps it was the universal kindness that binds all of God's creatures together.
