Given:

8.4km upstream in 14 minutes.

Speed of a boat in still water : Speed of a stream = 6 : 1

Let the speed of a boat in still water be 6x,

Speed of a stream be x

Speed in upstream direction, x – y

⇒ 6x – x

⇒ 5x

Speed = Distance/Time

⇒ 5x = 8.4km/14 min

⇒ 5x = 0.6km/min

⇒ x = 0.6/5 km/min

Speed in downstream direction, x + y

⇒ 6x + x

⇒ 7x

Putting the value of x,

⇒ 7 × 0.6/5

⇒ 4.2/5

Distance to travel in downstream is 33.6 km

Using the formula,

⇒ 4.2/5 = 33.6/Time

⇒ Time = (33.6 × 5)/4.2

⇒ Time = 40 minutes

∴ Time required to cover 33.6 km distance is 40 minutes.
