2 is the smallest prime number.

A prime number is a number that has only two factors, that is 1 and the number itself.

The smallest non-zero number is 1.

The factor of 1 = 1

1 has only one factor which is 1 itself.

The next smallest non-zero number is 2.

Factors of 2 = 1 and 2

It has only two factors, 1 and the number itself 2.

Therefore, 2 is the smallest prime number.
