The word kinetic means motion. By definition, it is the energy possessed by an object due to its motion. For example, a moving car, a moving cycle and a football in motion are some examples of kinetic energy.

Since, kinetic energy is a form of energy, its SI unit is the same as that of energy, which is Joule. The CGS unit of kinetic energy is erg.
