Consider these two reactions:

Na + O2 -> Na2O

Na2O + H2O -> NaOH

And this one(rxn 3):

Na + H2O -> NaOH + H2

Is reaction 3 a shorter form of the first two reactions since the hydroxide is obtained in both cases? If yes, how is hydrogen evolved?
