Task: Changing a tire for a client

Steps:

  1. Assessment and Preparation:

    • Assess the vehicle's surroundings for potential hazards such as traffic, uneven ground, or nearby obstacles.
    • Park the vehicle on a flat, stable surface away from traffic if possible.
    • Engage the parking brake and turn off the engine.
  2. Gathering Tools and Equipment:

    • Gather all necessary tools and equipment: spare tire, jack, lug wrench, and any additional safety equipment such as reflective vests or warning triangles.
  3. Lifting the Vehicle:

    • Position the jack under the vehicle's frame or designated lifting point, as per the vehicle's manual.
    • Ensure the jack is stable and secure on a flat surface.
    • Use caution when lifting the vehicle to prevent strain or injury to your back.
  4. Loosening Lug Nuts:

    • Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire, but do not remove them completely yet.
    • Apply steady pressure while loosening to avoid slipping or sudden movements.
  5. Removing the Flat Tire:

    • Once lug nuts are loosened, carefully remove the flat tire from the hub.
    • Handle the tire with care to avoid strain or injury, especially if it's heavy or awkwardly positioned.
  6. Mounting the Spare Tire:

    • Align the spare tire with the wheel studs on the hub.
    • Lift the spare tire onto the hub, ensuring it is properly seated.
  7. Securing Lug Nuts:

    • Hand-tighten the lug nuts onto the wheel studs to secure the spare tire in place.
    • Use the lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even tightening and prevent warping of the wheel.
  8. Lowering the Vehicle:

    • Carefully lower the vehicle using the jack, ensuring it is lowered evenly and securely onto the ground.
    • Double-check that all lug nuts are securely tightened.
  9. Stowing Equipment:

    • Properly stow all tools and equipment, ensuring they are secured in the vehicle.
  10. Final Inspection:

    • Conduct a final inspection of the vehicle to ensure the spare tire is properly installed and all tools are accounted for.
    • Test drive the vehicle at low speeds to ensure the spare tire is functioning correctly.

Hazards:

  • Crushing or Pinching Injuries: Risk of injury when lifting the vehicle with the jack or handling heavy tires.
  • Slip, Trip, and Fall Hazards: Uneven ground, debris, or slippery surfaces can lead to slips, trips, or falls.
  • Traffic Hazards: Working near roadways poses a risk of being struck by passing vehicles.
  • Musculoskeletal Injuries: Strain or injury from awkward postures, repetitive motions, or lifting heavy objects.
  • Tool and Equipment Hazards: Risk of cuts, bruises, or other injuries when using tools such as lug wrenches.

Control Measures:

  • Use proper lifting techniques and mechanical aids when lifting heavy objects.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and safety boots.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings and be cautious of traffic when working roadside.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for the safe use of tools and equipment.
  • Take regular breaks to prevent fatigue and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

Responsible Person: The person performing the tire change is responsible for following this JSA, assessing the environment for hazards, and taking appropriate safety precautions throughout the task.

Review and Revision: This JSA should be periodically reviewed and revised as needed to incorporate any changes in procedures, equipment, or regulations, and to address any new hazards that may arise.
