(a) Allotropy:

Allotropy is the phenomenon where an element can exist in two or more different forms, known as allotropes, while remaining in the same physical state. These allotropes possess distinct molecular structures and properties. For instance, carbon exhibits allotropy with well-known forms such as graphite, diamond, and fullerenes, each having unique properties due to their molecular arrangements. Similarly, oxygen demonstrates allotropy with dioxygen (O2) and ozone (O3) being two of its allotropes. Allotropy is significant across various scientific disciplines, including materials science, chemistry, and engineering, as different allotropes may have vastly different properties, leading to diverse applications in industries ranging from electronics to medicine.

(b) Borax Bead Test:

The borax bead test is a qualitative analytical method used to identify specific metal ions based on the color exhibited by a borax bead when heated in the presence of these ions. In practice, a small loop of platinum or nichrome wire is dipped into molten borax (sodium borate) and then heated until a clear bead forms. A sample containing the metal ion of interest is introduced into the bead, followed by reheating in a flame. The color change observed in the borax bead is indicative of the metal ion present, as different metals form characteristic complexes with borate ions. This test finds widespread use in qualitative analysis, particularly in educational and laboratory settings, where it serves as a valuable tool for identifying and confirming the presence of specific metal ions in samples, aiding in research and educational endeavors in the field of chemistry.
