This story is set in the thirties of the 20th century when Gandhiji began his non violence movement against the British. The cow becomes symbolic of the synthesis between carrying on the traditions and yet adapting to the changing times. The image of the sacred cow and how people worship the animal becomes a repository of traditional values and when the cow is shot in the head by a British officer, thus saving several lives, it becomes a martyr in the cause of the Indian freedom struggle. The writer has given a realistic portrayal of India as well as the beliefs that people held.
यह कहानी बीसवीं शताब्दी के तीसवें दशक में स्थापित की गई जब गांधी जी ने अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ अपना अहिंसा आन्दोलन आरंभ किया था। गाय परम्पराओं का निर्वाह करने और समय परिवर्तन के अनुसार ढलने के बीच संयोजन का प्रतीक बन जाती है। पवित्र गाय की छवि और किस प्रकार लोग पशु की पूजा करते हैं, पारम्परारिक मूल्यों का द्योतक बन जाती है। जब अंग्रेज अधिकारी द्वारा गाय के सिर में गोली मारी जाती है तो वह भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के पवित्र उद्देश्य हेतु शहीद बन जाती है और कई लोगों के प्राण बचाती है। लेखक ने भारत का वास्तविक शब्द चित्रण किया है, साथ ही लोग जो विश्वास पालते थे उनका भी (शब्द चित्रण किया है)।
