The play written by Abhijit Sircar is entitled as ‘The Phoenix’. It is pronounced as feenix. Phoenix is a mythological bird which is immortal. It remains forever. In the present play there are a few characters who survive in a nuclear holocaust. In the beginning there is only one character with a machine called as Bidhu and the computer. The character thinks that he i.e. Manab alone is the man on the earth. He is the last man on the earth. His computer is linked with the super computer that informs him about more lives. There is an enclave of those survived people. These people are staying at one place they call it as ‘phoenix’. These people who are staying at that place they are the few in the world.
Now the sole responsibility falls onthese persons to keep the world going on. That small group can also be called the last group of survived people on the earth. The playwright wants to tell us that these are immortal in a sense who will produce the more mortals. These persons will bring back the life to its main course. After the destruction these people meet from the different parts of the world with the help of the computer. Now they think that they will keep their life going on with the help of the machines they have. They will make a new world full of peace and prosperity. Thus the title of the play is adequate, suitable to the theme of the story of the play. The survived human beings are compared to the mythological bird which is immortal.
अभिजीत सरकार द्वारा लिखित एकांकी का शीर्षक ‘द फीनिक्स’ रखा गया है। इसका उच्चारण फीनिक्स है। फीनिक्स ग्रन्थों में वर्णित एक पक्षी है, जो हमेशा अमर है यह सदैव से ही है। वर्तमान एकांकी में कुछ पात्र हैं। जो एक परमाणु खतरे से बच जाते हैं। प्रारम्भ में केवल एक पात्र एक बिधु नामक मशीन के साथ है और उनके साथ एक कम्प्यूटर है। पात्र यह सोचता है कि वह अर्थात् मानब इस पृथ्वी पर अन्तिम व्यक्ति है। उसका कम्प्यूटर सुपर कम्प्यूटर से जुड़ा हुआ है जो उसे और अधिक जीवन के बारे में सूचित करता है। इन बचे हुए लोगों की एक मानव बस्ती है। वे लोग एक स्थान पर रुके हुए हैं। वे इसे फीनिक्स के नाम से पुकारते हैं। यह लोग जो उस स्थान पर ठहरे हुए हैं वे इस संसार में बचे हुए ही चन्द लोग हैं।
इन लोगों पर अब पूर्ण उत्तरदायित्व आ गया है जो इस संसार को अनवरत जारी रखेंगे। यह छोटा-सा समूह जिसे पृथ्वी पर बचे हुए लोगों का अन्तिम समूह भी कहा जा सकता है। एकांकी लेखक हमें यह कहना चाहता है कि यह वे अमर लोग हैं जो कि नाशवानों को उत्पन्न करेंगे। यह लोग ही जीवन को मुख्य धारा में वापस लेकर आयेंगे। विनाश के पश्चात् यह लोग विश्व के विभिन्न भागों से एक जगह इकट्ठा होकर मिलते हैं। इसमें कम्प्यूटर उनकी सहायता करता है। अब वे यह सोच रहे हैं कि वे अपने जीवन को उनके पास उपलब्ध मशीनों की सहायता से जारी रखेंगे। वे एक नवीन संसार बनाएंगे जो कि शान्ति और समृद्धि से भरा हुआ होगा। इस प्रकार से एकांकी का शीर्षक उचित और एकांकी की कहानी के उपयुक्त है। बचे हुए मानवों की तुलना ग्रन्थों में वर्णित उस पक्षी से की जाती है जो कि अमर है।
