Chipko movement was an educational movement which resulted from regularly recurring natural disasters in the areas of Himachal Pradesh and Tehri Garhwal. The people of these areas saw that dangerous floods and landslides had become frequent in the areas and they blamed the local contractors for this who had mindlessly cut down the trees and led to deforestation. In 1972, the women of the villages started this movement in the leadership of Gaura Devi to stop the cutting of the trees
