Best answer

In Ionic compounds, ions are held tightly together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction making them quite rigid and hence even when a small force is applied to the compound, the force causes the ions to get displaced from the lattice and they suffer repulsion from similar charged ions in the lattice causing the ionic solids to shatter.
