A compound X (having vinegar like smell) when treated with ethanol in the presence of the acid Z, gives a compound Y which has a fruity smell. The reaction

C2H5OH + X + Z --->Y + H2

(i) Identify Y and Z. 

(ii) Write the structural formula of X. 

(iii) Name the above reaction.

(i) Compound Y is acetic acid (CH3COOH) as it has vinegar like smell. Z is a protic acid for example HCI (aq).

(ii)  The structural formula of X is CH3COOC2H5 (Ethyl ethanoate or ethyl acetate).

(iii) The above reaction is known as 'Esterification' reaction.
