Solve the given pair of linear equations, 

(a – b)x + (a + b)y = a2 – 2ab – b2 

(a + b) (x + y) = a2 + b2

x(-2b) = – 2b(a + b) 

⇒ x = (a + b) 

Put this value of ‘x’ in eq (1) we get 

(a – b) (a + b) + (a + b)y = a2 – 2ab – b2

a2 – b2 + (a + b)y = a2 – 2ab – b2 

⇒ y = \(\frac{-2ab}{a+b}\)

∴ Solution to given pair of linear equations x = a + b, y = \(\frac{-2ab}{a+b}\)
