Given △XYZ, ∠Y is right angle.

By Pythagoras theorem 

XZ2 = YZ2 + XY2 

172 = 152 + XY2 

XY2 = 172 – 152 = 289 – 225 

XY2 = 64

XY = \(\sqrt{64}\) = 8
